Video Ode To YOU And Paul Harvey March 7, 2013 ![]() Over the years, voice talent-broadcaster-producer John Taylor has played legendary Paul Harvey-esq characters in numerous radio spots. And his capture of the late radio commentator's unique style is spot-on. So when Harvey's famous rendition of "And God Made A Farmer" aired in a commercial during the 2013 Super Bowl, Taylor couldn't sit still. "I loved that ad," Taylor says, "and thought it could be reworked to apply to our craft. I believe in the value of what we do. "I am astounded by the generosity of the people who excel at voice acting," Taylor tells VoiceOverXtra. "The people who populate the top levels of the business seem to have an incredible sensitivity to others, and an emotional maturity. "I have been the beneficiary of many kindnesses over my career. This was a way to say thanks." 'AND GOD MADE A VOICE ACTOR' ... PAUL HARVEY, THE POET Taylor is a popular radio personality on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, and is also a well-known freelance voice actor and producer for animation, TV promos, trailers, commercials and video games. Clients include Toyota, Fox TV, Nickelodeon, Universal Studios and many more. He also does live event announcing. And he's fascinated by Paul Harvey. "The voice print is unique - the pauses, the pacing, the slight denture whistle, they're all part of the sound," Taylor notes. "But the main component of Paul Harvey's magic was the writing. He was a poet. He believed every word he ever said. His ultimate commitment as a performer at the microphone always came through, and made him consistently compelling. "Borrowing Mr. Harvey's structure, alliteration, cadence and rhythm help mask any deficiencies in my voice match attempt." Nevertheless, Taylor notes that Brad Wheelis, an ABC Radio News anchor and former colleague of Harvey's "left me a note of praise. So I think I honored the spirit of Paul Harvey."
