Home Studio Internet TV Show Debuts
Sunday Night - Call Dan & George
March 18, 2011

(VOXtra) - The voice over industry is gathering at the East-West AUDIO Body Shop (EWABS) this Sunday night (March 20) - and you don't have to leave home to get there to join the fun.

EWABS is an Internet TV show featuring voice over tech talk with home studio gurus and consultants Dan Lenard and George Whittam.

They'll chat about home studio topics and answer call-in questions ala the popular NPR Car Talk radio show.

EWABS debuts Sunday on USTREAM.TV at 8 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Pacific). Here's the link to hit at showtime:

ALWAYS TALKIN' TECH

"George and I find that whenever we talk together at industry events, other people gather round and listen," says Lenard (pictured), who is also a veteran broadcaster and voice talent.

As a consultant, Lenard is known as the Home Studio Master. And VoiceOverXtra followers know him as the instructor of monthly webinars on home studio topics.

"We always talk shop and discuss the weird home studio problems of our clients," Lenard says. "So the idea of a talk show evolved, where people can call in with their weird audio problems to try to stump us.

"We'll answer questions, solve problems, talk tech and equipment, and answer trivia questions - all in an understandable and humorous manner," Lenard explains.

GEORGE WITH STARS

Based in Los Angeles, Whittam (pictured) is owner of Eldorado Recording Services, and is popularly known as the the home studio consultant to the stars.

He was personal home studio consultant to the late Don LaFontaine and co-founder and designer of the Don LaFontaine Voice Over Lab at the SAG Foundation in Los Angeles.

"With George's client connections in LA, we'll also have special guests each week," Lenard notes.

EARLY Q&A ...

As Dan and George prepared for their show debut, VoiceOverXtra popped in with an early Q&A for them ...

This type of show is overdue and needed. Who came up with the idea FIRST? Really!

Dan: It was a combination of both our concepts. I wanted to do a VO talk show and George wanted to do a tech webcast.

Perfect amalgamation!

We also need to promote our services and want to give some of the best coaches and noted people in our business the opportunity to give us all a little bit about how they do what they do.

We like to call it guiltless promotion

George: It came together so fast because it came to us at pretty much the same time!

I had just been listening to NPR's Car Talk and it hit me that Dan and I could be doing the same thing for VO.

Every time we Skype it's like a radioshow as it is. It just seemed a natural next step.

Dan mentions humor, but tech talk is serious stuff. Can you joke about it?

Dan: Serious? I like to dispel some of the mythology around what's really necessary to have a home voice over studio.

What people hear and put into practice is actually pretty funny.

We both have so many funny anecdotes about what we've encountered in our consulting practices. People will laugh and learn.

George: I might be the straight man to Dan's funny, but I am sure to bring some funny to the table, too.

We'll do our best to keep it entertaining and informative at the same time.

Will you be taking questions live? Doing online demos, even?

Dan: We'll see what cat drags in. This is new territory.

We'll be taking the best questions submitted to our Facebook page and calling those people back when we do the show live Sunday.

George: We can also bring in callers via phone, Skype, or even Source Connect.

Whatever they have, we'll use it to bring their voice into the show.

It's going to be highly interactive, with a minimal amount of Dan and I blabbing on and on about all the things voice actors do wrong in their studios.

Everyone is bound to learn something, including us!

Dan is East Coast. George is West Coast. Is this show how the 'Twain Shall Meet'?

Dan:
We both have our areas of expertise.

I teach the basics to having a home studio, and George is a great problem solver. We teach each other stuff.

George: I find we compliment each other really well in our abilities to supplement our knowledge areas.

Dan has a few years on me, and spent a good deal of time in radio on-air, not to mention his successful voice acting career.

I have a music and recording degree with live and studio recording, broadcast remote engineering, and film production sound experience.

It's highly unlikely there's a question we can't answer.

What kind of content can we expect in your debut show?

Dan: Our first show will be an enhanced dress rehearsal.

We've tested the system for the past few weeks and we think we have it down technically.

Now we just have to go for it and see what happens. That alone should be worth tuning into!

George: It's one thing to build a race car, it's an entirely different thing to race it!

I look forward to getting to be in the driver's seat for a change, engineering something live, and getting a word in here and there, too.

We were tempted to put off the first publicly "aired" show until we had some more time behind the wheel, but thought why not get it out there and let our audience help up us hone the format.

Anything else? What didn't I ask?

Dan: This will be so much better than someone doing a webcast because "they can."

This will be a very special show for people in our business. Stuff that's easy to relate to.

George: I don't think we realized the desire for a show like this until we began to spread the word.

We're happy to follow in the footsteps of great webcasters like Leo Laporte of TWIT, arguably my biggest idol in webcasting today.

Thanks, guys. We'll see you Sunday night!

Dan & George have a wonderful idea here, to produce a radio show with advice to struggling narrators and vo actors. I will for sure be listening.
