Over the years I've noticed many companies and individuals selling
lists of leads in the voice-over industry. It got me thinking; are
selling leads ethical? Do they actually work? I did a little research and read some articles like this one. I think if the leads seller gets permission from companies to sell their
contact information to third parties, then it's cool. If they
demonstrate transparency, even better. If you want to buy a list of
voice-over leads because you think it's convenient, but can't be bothered
with without properly vetting the source, caveat emptor.
'THERE'S NO SHORTCUT' To quote fabulous voice talent and all-around good egg Maria Pendolino:
There's truly no shortcut to good and viable leads.
And she's right. I will never tell a voice talent how to spend their
money, but I have never bought a list of leads, and I don't think I ever
will. Every lead I've gotten that turned into a solid client came from
either my own research or vetting a lead that a trusted source referred
me to. If you are still considering buying a list of leads, ask the seller these questions and see how they react:
