VOICE OVER INCOME By Dervla Trainor As freelance voice actors, maintaining great client relationships is key to success! Those ongoing relationships are the bread and butter of many lucrative careers. But occasionally you'll have a client making you question whether it's time to let them go. It can be hard to cut off that revenue stream, but sometimes you get to the point where the pay isn't worth the hassle. I've been there and it's uncomfortable in the moment, but I've never regretted. Why? Because something better always comes along to fill in that gap - and then some! Do you have a client who you're thinking of dumping but not sure if you should? Here are some telltale signs: 1. Low Rates, High Expectations We set clear expectations before engaging in the project, outlining what's covered - such as amount of pick-ups, retakes, script changes, turnaround time, etc. (as a side note, if you aren't already doing this, start now!). Sometimes though, they may still push for more than agreed upon without wanting to pay more. It’s a clear signal they don’t respect your time or talent. 2. Constant Communication Issues If a client constantly nitpicks and gives vague, conflicting or unrealistic direction, is it really worth the frustration bleeding into the rest of your day (and your performances)? 3. Constant Delays in Payment If you’re repeatedly chasing down payments, that’s a big red flag. Your time is valuable, and so is your work. 4. You Just Don’t Mesh If you dread seeing their name pop up in your inbox or feel drained after every session, that’s your cue. A healthy working relationship should feel respectful and collaborative, not like a struggle. 5. If Their Demands Don't Fit With Your Lifestyle Many of us choose this career for the flexibility to shape it around our lifestyle. If, for example, you’re firm about spending evenings with family, but a client keeps asking for rush jobs after 5pm, even if they’re lovely people and maybe just in another time zone, that could still be a reason to part ways. Remember, you're allowed to move on from clients that don’t align with your values, your work style, or your worth. When you do, you make space for new, better opportunities! NOW, HOW TO DO IT Once you decide to part ways with the client, the next step is actually doing it. Keep reading below for some tips on how to do it: Explain why you can’t continue, but keep it positive. You could say something like, “It’s been great working with you, but I’ve recently had to rethink my priorities and need to focus on projects that fit better with where I’m headed right now.” This keeps things professional without burning bridges. 2. Give Them Notice Don’t leave them hanging! Wrap up any current projects or give a reasonable heads-up. 3. Stay Professional Even if it has been super frustrating working with them, keep it friendly. Thank them for the opportunity and avoid making it personal. The goal is to leave on good terms, not vent your frustrations. 4. Offer Solutions If possible, recommend another voice actor who might be a better fit for their needs. This helps ease the transition and shows you’re still considerate of their success, even though you’re moving on. Ending a client relationship can feel awkward, but it'll make your life and your career so much more enjoyable, and possibly more lucrative too - with the right clients this time! Now go out there, dump that client if needed, and allow it to make space for you to do greater things.
