SAG-AFTRA STRIKE
In The SAG-AFTRA TV-Theatrical-Streaming
Strike, What Voice Over Union Jobs Are Affected?
July 17, 2023

(VOXtra) - If your voice over work involves movies and certain aspects of TV, that work has likely been put on hold by the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Production was shut down by the union's July 13 decision to strike following the expiration of TV, Theatrical and Streaming contracts without a new deal.

A guide (seen at right) published by NAVA - the National Association of Voice Actors - lists the types of voice over work affected by the dispute, including:
  • Feature length animated firms
  • Looping
  • ADR and voice matching for TV and films
  • Trailers, and
  • Narration in a feature film
NAVA supports strikers and urges voice actors to "not work on or audition for these types of jobs. Especially if it seems like a job that was once union is now turning non-union to avoid the strike."

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

Mostly, the union is seeking more compensation and protection for members in the evolving worlds of content streaming and AI.

"After more than four weeks of negotiations, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) - the entity that represents major studios and streamers, including Amazon, Apple, Disney, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros. Discovery - remains unwilling to offer a fair deal on the key issues that you told us are important to you," said union President Fran Drescher and Executive Director/Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland in a July 13 statement.

However, work is allowed to continue under numerous other contracts that the union lists here.

NON-AFFECTED VO

"Voice actors can still work in almost every other genre of voice over that exists," adds NAVA.

And that list is long, including commercials, video games/interactive, dubbing, audiobooks, non-broadcast corporate narration and explainers (corporate educational), phone systems, in-show narration for cable shows, TV/basic cable animation, new media animation, promos, podcasts and politicals.
