talented and proud audiobook production and performance nominees
with medals draped on their chests traversed the halls of the elegant
New-York Historical Society last night at the 2018 Audie Awards® Gala. Presented by the Audio Publishers Association (APA) and now in its 23rd year, this was a classy yet casual affair as audiobook producers,
publishers and narrators reveled in the evening's festivities and cheered as winners of the APA's annual Audie Awards competition were announced. 2017 Best Male Narrator winner Simon Vance hosted the show with both gravitas and a delightfully dry wit. Lincoln in the Bardo was feted as Audiobook of the Year (see comments below), and top narrator honors went to:
Highlights from the evening included Simon's charming opening
monologue, a brief but heartfelt acknowledgement of the passing of
narrator great Katherine Kellgren, and the running joke when one of the
presenters asked when announcing the nominees, should they say the word
"slash" if there is a slash in the script? It was a wonderful
celebration of the audiobook industry. Special thanks to the Audio
Publishers Association for putting together an unforgettable night! AND THE 2018 WINNERS ARE ...
Congratulations to all! PRAISE FOR LINCOLN IN THE BARDO The
APA explains that the Audiobook of the Year award recognizes the audiobook that, through quality,
innovation, marketing and sales, has had the most significant impact on the
industry. "This year's Audiobook of the Year committee
was dazzled by Lincoln in the Bardo's record-breaking cast of 166
voices, showcasing celebrity voices including Nick Offerman, David Sedaris, and
author George Saunders as well as expert audio narrators, notably Cassandra
Campbell and Kirby Heyborne," says the APA. "This unique title provides an auditory experience
unlike any other, with strong appeal to literary readers new to audiobooks,
fans of the format captivated by stellar production qualities, and podcast
listeners intrigued by the soundscape's realization of Saunders' unique
authorial structure."
